About Karen + The Joy of Mindful (tr)Eating

If it has to do with living better and eating healthier, I can help.

So let’s start here (check all that apply): I’m here because:

  • I want to have a better understanding of how the food I eat affects my body.
  • I want to start eating healthier, but I’m afraid it’s too expensive or I not sure where to begin.
  • I want to lose weight in a way that isn’t restrictive. (Say, “GOOD-BYE DIET CULTURE!”)
  • I need someone who understands the mind-games that extreme weight loss can play.

Here’s the good news, my friend! There is no wrong answer. If any or all of the above apply, you’re in the right place.

IMG_7815My name is Karen Dooley and it’s my goal to educate individuals, families, and parents of all children on simple ways to improve their health through lifestyle, exercise, attitude and nutrition. I help others to realize that as individuals we are more than just a number on the scale. My focus as a health coach is not on quick-fix weight loss or diet plans; it’s about eating and living better for life.

From recipe ideas, shopping tips, and nutritional guidance, I’m here to make health your new hobby with The Joy of Mindful (tr)Eating!

Since having weight loss surgery in 2014 and maintaining a loss of over 100lbs, I have worked hard to truly understand the relationship between my diet, how it affects my body and my mental health. I’ve struggled my entire life as an overweight person – dealing with eating disorders and body image problems even after reaching my “goal weight.” YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Read more about what being anti-diet culture means to me.

I am a lot of things, but most of all I am human.

I love true crime podcasts, sci-fi, vintage fashion, yoga, fitness and trying to find balance in all aspects of my life. My husband and I drove cross country to move from Massachusetts to Oregon in our 2-door MINI Cooper with our rescue dogs in the back. Speaking of dogs… it’s my mission in life to pat ALL the dogs. Ever. You’ve got a dog? I’m gonna pat it.

I. Love. FOOD. Making it, eating it… feeding it to other people. There’s just something about pouring your heart and soul into a meal that brings me joy unlike anything else. I didn’t always enjoy cooking, though. You could say that my personal health journey was the catalyst for my newfound love of making things from scratch and sharing these creations with others. My mother inspires me the most when it comes to my cooking and baking adventures.Karen and her mom

You may be asking yourself… what’s the use of having a health coach anyway?

Ultimately, coaches act as your ally, helping you to build confidence and self-awareness, encouraging you to become your own health advocate, and supporting you in developing the skills to sustain these new behaviors.

We live in a society that often paints losing weight as the ultimate solution to every problem. It’s no surprise that after what is often a lifetime of weight-based stigma, many bariatric patients may come to believe their lives will become healthier, quicker and all at once after surgery.

Even if you’ve lost weight naturally (by that I mean without the help of bariatric surgery) the maintenance of your weight loss success will be a lifelong affair.
